Splish-splash! Happy birthday, Big Bill!

September 15, 2010

William Howard Taft, 27th President of the United States, was born on Sept. 15, 1857.  He was the largest President to date…6’2” tall and over 330 pounds.

There is an oft told story of President Taft being so large that he once got stuck in a conventional sized claw-foot bathtub and it reportedly took several men and many pounds of butter to remove the Commander-In-Chief from the tub. Another version of the story…even more questionable…is that he actually broke the bathtub.

Whether or not the story is true, what we do know is that President Taft had a custom-made bathtub installed in the White House. The tub was seven feet long and three and half feet wide and could accommodate four average sized men.

President Taft's custom, Trenton made bathtub.

That tub was made my the J. L. Mott and Sons pottery on Lalor Street in Trenton.

Just an example of Trenton’s industrial past that lends credence to the motto:

Trenton Makes the World Takes.
